Does Getting Dental Veneers Hurt?

Find out more about what goes into getting dental veneers.

Dental veneers can be a great way to mask certain imperfections like cracks, discolorations, gaps between teeth and other veneersproblems. If our La Jolla, San Deigo dentist Dr. Edmund Jay has already determined that your smile could benefit from veneers, the only thing left to do is determine if you are ready for veneers. Find out more about what goes into getting veneers and how easy and non-invasive it truly is.

These thin porcelain shells are adhered to the front of your teeth to cover certain dental imperfections that keep you from having the perfect smile. Dental veneers are a great way for those with unsightly aesthetic issues to still have straight, vibrant teeth. Of course, some people steer clear of this cosmetic treatment because they worry it will hurt. But, we are here to break down this treatment so you really know what to expect.

Consultation

When you come into our office interested in getting veneers, our La Jolla, San Diego cosmetic dentist will examine your smile to make sure that it is ideal for veneers. We will also talk to you about your goals to make sure that veneers will be able to give you what you want.

Tooth Preparation

This is usually the part that has patients asking a lot of questions, particularly whether it will hurt. We are happy to say that because this treatment is non-invasive, the tooth preparation required is minimal. Unlike a dental crown, which requires an extensive amount of tooth enamel to be removed, dental veneers only require about 0.5 mm of reduction.

Most of the time, this preparation can be performed without even needing anesthesia. However, if this part of your treatment has you feeling a little anxious, we would be happy to provide anesthesia to alleviate your concerns. After all, we want you to feel comfortable throughout your treatment.

We will also take impressions of your smile and send them to a lab, where they will get to work making your customized veneers.

Placing Veneers

Once your veneers are made and sent to us, you will come back in to have them placed. Your teeth will already be prepared so the only thing that we will need to do is make sure that you approve of your new smile. We will temporarily apply the veneers, so you get a chance to see how your new smile will look before applying a resin between your veneers and your natural teeth and then painlessly hardening the resin with a laser. One final polish of your veneers and the treatment is finished!

Dental veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic dental options in La Jolla, San Diego. Find out what your smile could look like with these restorations. Call our office today to schedule your initial consultation.
